RYA Youth Dinghy Stages
All RYA Youth Stages are €195. Course dates are displayed in the calendar below.
General Course Information: The minimum age for any RYA Youth Stage is 8 years old. Each course last for 2 days with the course timings running 09:30 – 17:30 unless stated otherwise at time of booking. All courses run to a max instructor to student ratio of 1:6 with students being assessed continuously throughout the course. No prior reading required.

Stage 1
Course Content: This course provides an introduction to sailing and boat handling. By the end of this introductory course, you will have a basic understanding of how a boat sails, with some experience of steering and handling the boat. This module includes launching and recovery, steering, parts of the boat, basic sailing.
Ability after the Course: To have a basic sailing knowledge and experienced steering and handling the boat.
Prior Experience: No prior experience required.
Course Materials Provided: RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Logbook (G11)

Stage 2
Course Content: A range of sailing skills and knowledge to help become a confident sailor will be taught. This module includes basic sailing skills, ropework, and collision avoidance.
Ability after the Course: Have a good sailing knowledge, be able to tack and control boat speed.
Prior Experience: Some basic understanding of sailing knowledge and skills, or Stage 1 equivalent.
Course Materials Provided: N/A

Stage 3
Course Content: Equivalent to an Adult Level 2 in the National Sailing Scheme, this course will allow for more independent sailing. This module includes rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques, capsize recovery, and sailing theory.
Ability after the Course: To be able to sail around a triangular course in moderate sailing conditions.
Prior Experience: A good understanding of sailing knowledge and skills, or Stage 2 equivalent.
Course Materials Provided: N/A

Stage 4
Course Content: Sail a double-handed boat as crew or helm, and solve a variety of problems afloat. (optional if Stage 3 was taken in a double hander). This module includes; rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques and manoeuvres in crewed boats, recovering a man overboard.
Ability after the Course: To be able to sail a crewed dinghy around a triangular course in moderate sailing conditions. Be able to launch and return to a beach, jetty or mooring.
Prior Experience: A good sailing knowledge and boat handling skills, or Stage 3 equivalent.
